Yeeeha! This is GREAT. Panther is installed now, and it's all good news. Some notes from me upgrade experience so far, for posterity:

Tangerine iBook 300MHz 320MB RAM, 6GB HD

Bought 256MB PC100 RAM module for cheap as recommended above by Bill. Good service, fast delivery from 18004memory.com, plus check out their buy back program.

Memory installed without a hitch. So much for concerns about PC100 memory in old iBooks. Talked to the retailer who issued the original warning, and he swears he's had two cases of PC100 memory rendering old iBooks unbootable. Not me, though.

Installation of Panther was flawless, and I'm surprised that it seems to "know" about my iBook. Panther knows where it is, and I pretty much didn't have to configure a thing.

Speed is definitely sluggish -- nowhere near as snappy as OS 9 -- but that's to be expected, and it's really not bad. In fact (get a load of this), I'd say it's almost as fast as Jaguar on my G4 1.25. Almost. If Panther on a iBook 300 runs damn near as well as Jaguar on a G4 1.25, I'm really looking forward to using Panther on the G4. :-)

Installed AirPort cards on both machines this morning and had my iBook sending and receiving information through thin air within ten minutes, I kid you not. Setup is that easy, works like a charm. I am browsing, posting, printing from the iBook, and using iTunes to play music from the G4, not a cable in sight. Aaah.

So, this is a substantive upgrade for me with real improvements in functionality, not just, "Hey, cool, it'll actually run Panther." There is no doubt that I'll be keeping this iBook much longer than I expected. Yay!

I *love* my Clamshell 466, and I agree that the icebook is so much duller. I previously owned an icebook 500 and the difference was minimal. One thing I have to say though: the 800x600 screen is definitely a problem. iMovie 3 won't run on it. Other than that: i'll keep it running for as long as I can: I still get a lot of response when i'm working on it. People think it looks so good, they can't believe it has been discontinued three years ago! But then again, I get the same response on my eMate...

Has anyone ever tried to put an icebook screen in a clamshell? I think in theory it should be possible (the ATI Rage mobility in the 366/466 series is certainly up to it).
There must be a ton of broken 500's with intact screens to put to use. Although I don't think i'd have the stomach for it: I remember breaking my Powerbook 540's screen, back in the nineties. Fiddling with LCD is for pros. But I would certainly pay a couple of hundred euros/dollars for it if someone would offer the service.

I can't seem t get the sharing of iTunes to work correctly. I only seem to be able to launch the copy on my iBook. I have sharing turned on on the iMac. Any suggestions?
